About Pat Doyen
I work in photography, film and mixed media, and the boundaries of these fields often overlap in my art. Even though my artwork is reproduction-based, my interest with surface and textural aspects is expressed by evidence of my own hand, so prints can take the form of transfers onto handmade paper or canvas, photos with encaustic, monoprints, cyanotypes and lumen prints, in addition to traditional photographic prints.
The juxtaposition of obsolete and emerging technologies has proven to be an illuminating principle in my artwork. My filmmaking is a mix of old and new technologies and often very tactile; I hand process motion picture film and use archival footage in digital projects. My artwork is heavily influenced by my training as a film archivist. Being an archivist has fueled my love for the medium of film itself and of “orphan” pop culture.
I studied at NYU, State University of New York at Buffalo, and at the Selznick School of Film Preservation. My work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, recently at The Mitchell Gallery in Annapolis, Off-Rhode Gallery in DC, ArtDC in Hyattsville, The Washington School of Photography and the Baton Rouge Gallery. I have also taught classes and workshops at Visual Studies Workshop, LSU, William & Hobart Smith College, and others.
